Food insecurity affects families across Chicagoland throughout the year. Rising grocery, housing, and transportation costs can force households to choose between food and other necessities, while newly arrived families and neighbors experiencing financial hardship may have limited access to public assistance. Zakat Chicago responds through a coordinated network of year-round and seasonal food programs that provide fresh, nutritious, halal, and culturally familiar food to eligible individuals and families. By partnering with trusted community organizations and supporting direct distributions, we help neighbors meet immediate needs with dignity, choice, and peace of mind.
Food Pantries
Zakat Chicago supports Muslim-owned and operated food pantries across Chicagoland, helping families find dependable assistance within communities they know and trust. Partner pantries distribute fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, dry goods, baby food, pantry staples, and halal poultry and meat. This culturally responsive approach helps households prepare familiar meals while respecting dietary needs. In 2025, the pantry network helped more than 100,000 individuals access essential groceries. When temporary interruptions and eligibility changes affected SNAP assistance, Zakat Chicago also provided emergency grants to pantry partners so they could respond quickly to increased demand among refugee, asylum-seeking, and other vulnerable households.
Ramadan Iftaar
During Ramadan, the Ramadan Iftaar program provides nourishing, ready-to-enjoy meals for fasting neighbors who may not have the resources, time, or facilities to prepare a complete evening meal. Through community-based distribution partners, individuals and families receive nutritious, halal, and culturally preferred meals at the time they are needed most. In 2025, Zakat Chicago helped provide iftaar meals to more than 4,700 people across the Chicago area.
Ramadan Nourishment Program
The Ramadan Nourishment Program gives households the ingredients they need to prepare wholesome iftaar and suhoor meals throughout the month. Food boxes include essential, culturally familiar staples such as rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, pasta, dates, lentils, and beans. Providing ingredients rather than prepared meals gives families flexibility to cook according to their household size, traditions, and dietary needs. In 2025, Zakat Chicago distributed more than 900 food boxes—500 delivered directly to families and more than 400 provided through grant partners—supporting over 4,500 individuals during Ramadan.
Eid al-Adha Nourishment Program
The Eid al-Adha Nourishment program helps vulnerable Muslim families celebrate Eid with food on the table and greater peace of mind. Each package combines essential pantry staples with Zabihah halal beef or lamb, giving families the ingredients to prepare wholesome meals and participate in the joy of the holiday. The campaign, in 2025, reached more than 600 families across Chicagoland.
Feast with Dignity
Feast with Dignity is Zakat Chicago’s annual halal turkey distribution, helping local families gather around a special meal without giving up other necessities. In 2025, the program reached more than 5,600 families through community-based distribution partners. Discover how the program works, whom it serves, and how you can help make the next distribution possible.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized the virtue of feeding others, saying:
أَطْعِمُوا الْجَائِعَ، وَعُودُوا الْمَرِيضَ، وَفُكُّوا الْعَانِيَ
“Feed the hungry, visit the sick, and set free the captives.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5373)
